The Women’s Leagues Forum has welcomed Canada’s Northern Super League and Denmark’s A-Liga to its growing ranks of member leagues intent on raising professional standards and growing the women’s game.
Zurich, 11 November 2025 - The six-team Northern Super League is in its first season, having brought professional women’s football to Canada through the efforts of co-founder and Chief Growth Officer Diana Matheson, a former national team player and Olympic medallist. Just six months after its first match, the Northern Super League has attracted significant corporate partnerships and investment, broadcast distribution and an average attendance of 4,000 per game.
“Joining the Women’s Leagues Forum is another step forward in connecting Canada’s professional women’s league to the global game,” said Matheson.
“The Northern Super League was built to provide Canadian players a place to compete at the highest level at home, and to help accelerate the growth of women’s football everywhere.”
In Denmark, the women’s league is now structured as an independent league and recently relaunched as the A-Liga run by the Ligaforbundet. It brings a decades-long history of offering professionalised opportunities in the Danish league to develop both local and international women footballers.
“The Danish League Association (Ligaforbundet’s) inclusion in the Women’s Leagues Forum underscores our firm belief that the future of women’s football lies in global collaboration. We see ourselves as a development partner, bringing a long tradition of talent development into the global community. We are convinced that by standing united, we can accelerate the growth of women football everywhere and elevate the game,” said Ligaforbundet CEO, Marie Greve.
The Secretary to the Board of the Women’s Leagues Forum, Moya Dodd, welcomed them to the Group.
“It’s exciting to have the NSL and the A-Liga join our shared efforts to grow professionalism, advocate for the interests of national leagues, and give players the best stage to play on,” she said.
“National leagues are the growth engine of our game, creating career opportunities for players, regular matches for sponsors and broadcasters, and building a new fan culture.
Since November 2023, the Women’s Leagues Forum has been working under the umbrella of the World Leagues Association to foster cooperation between the world’s top women’s leagues, and to represent them at the global level.
